Dena’s Story: I don’t do yard work.
In February of 2021, my husband Don required our daughter to accompany him to a Cornerstone Restoration Serve Day. The following month, he merely asked her to go.
She responded, "I don’t do yard work.”
Then he asked me, “Would you like to go?”
In my head, I was thinking, “I don’t do yard work!”
Well, I take that back. I do not mind mowing the lawn because it provides time for me to listen to a podcast and get my steps in. Although I do not really “do” yard work, I agreed to go to the Serve Day because I realized it was not about the “yard work” but doing God’s work together as husband and wife. This is something we had not done as a couple since before children.
When we arrived at the Serve Day, the site was a beautiful piece of land with a trailer and a dilapidated house. The Good Lord knew how to play to my strengths and interests. People were needed to mow and weed-whack. Don immediately volunteered us. This was like home where I mow, and he whacks weeds. We began our “yard work” dance around the trailer and continued into the fields. Before I knew it, three hours had passed. When I finished and looked around, the amount of work done by many hands was awe-inspiring. But more importantly, these many hands helped the recipient feel Christ's love.
When Don asked if I wanted to go with him in April, I said, “YES!"
I have been doing “yard work” with my husband monthly since then. But, it is not yard work. It is time for us to spend together, do a spiritual workout, be thankful for our blessings, and be of service.
Growing up, my father inspired me to look for Christ in others. So, I want to encourage you to be open to the calling of the Holy Spirit. Give of your time, talent, and/or treasure to touch the lives of people who are images of Christ. In doing so, you will make a spiritual impact not only on the recipient of Cornerstone’s work but on the people, like me and Don, who volunteer our time (notice I did not say talent) to serve the Lord.
